Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Myzel mushrooms, production, certifications, and more.

Where do Myzel’s mushrooms come from?2023-05-09T16:05:39+00:00
How does Myzel grow mushrooms?2023-05-01T15:33:01+00:00

Myzel’s Functional Mushrooms are grown in a highly regulated, nutraceutical facility in Ontario, Canada.

We grow our mushrooms in bags of sorghum (a cereal grain), and incorporate the fermented substrate, mycelial biomass and fruiting bodies in our full-spectrum mushroom powders.

How does Myzel produce mushroom powders?2023-05-01T15:19:29+00:00
  1. We do the necessary quality analysis on all our Sorghum deliveries.
  2. We mix the grain with water and cook the mixture.
  3. We add gypsum and other ingredients to the medium to support mycelial growth. Then we bag the mixture, and sterilize both the bag and its contents.
  4. We inoculate the cooled grain with a target species and seal the bag. Target speices include: Almond Mushrooms, Chaga, Cordyceps, Lion’s Mane, Maitake, Reishi, and Shiitake. The inoculated bags are stored in a sterile room, where they grow until mature and ready for harvest.
  5. Once the growing cycle is complete, the mycelial blocks and fruiting bodies are dried in a custom dryer.
  6. The mycelial blocks and fruiting bodies are powdered to our customers specifications and packaged for delivery.
How are Myzel’s mushrooms processed?2024-06-05T19:45:52+00:00

Once harvested, the mushrooms are dehydrated in a proprietary dyer. The mushrooms are then milled into a fine powder.

In some cases, like Cordyceps, the mushroom powder is re-heated to break down cellular structure and activate beneficial compounds.

Some mushrooms are sold as a single variety, while others are blended into a custom formula.

Post packaging, the mushrooms are shipped to buyers for use.

We pride ourselves on meeting and exceeding Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and HACCP Regulations at every stage of our growth and production process. Myzel neither irradiates our mushrooms, nor adds any secondary products to the mushroom blends.

We produce 100% pure full-spectrum mushroom powders.

Why does Myzel include mushroom mycelium?2023-03-08T21:02:52+00:00

Myzel incorporates both the mycelium and fruiting bodies in our mushroom powders to provide the most nutritious and beneficial blends to our customers.

Some of the species we grow produce fruiting bodies more abundantly than other species.  The mycelium, or root-system that grows on the sorghum, contains bio-active compounds (polysaccharides, prebiotic fibers, immune-supporting compounds) that aren’t present in the fruiting bodies.

What’s included in Myzel’s mushroom powders?2023-03-08T21:04:24+00:00

All of Myzel’s mushroom powders include fruiting bodies, fermented substrate, and active metabolites produced during the growing process. Once the growing cycle is complete, we dehydrate the mycelial blocks and grind each block to powder in our custom hammer mill.

We choose to cultivate our mushrooms on Organic White Sorghum. Compared to other grains, White Sorghum is tasteless, odorless, and gluten-free. It also offers a 97% bio-conversion rate, which provides the mushrooms a nutritious food source throughout their growth cycle

The enzymes produced as the mycelium breaks down the sorghum become an integral component of our mushroom powders.

Why does Myzel grow mushrooms on Sorghum?2023-03-08T21:06:55+00:00

We grow our mushrooms on Certified 100% Organic, Project Verified Non-GMO, gluten-free Sorghum.

Sorghum provides a uniquely nutritious and clean growing environment that facilitates enzyme production by the mushrooms.

Why does Myzel include fermented substrate in our powders?2023-03-08T21:09:00+00:00

Mushroom mycelia (the mushroom’s root-like system) grows on and digests the Sorghum blocks on which it grows. This process of digestion effectively ferments the organic Sorghum. As the mushrooms grow, they break down the Sorghum into cellular components for nutrition.  During this process their tissue becomes entangled with that of the Sorghum. The fermentation that takes place is all part of the growing process; there is no additional fermentation after the growing cycle is complete.

Many of our mushrooms secrete unique compounds into the substrate as they grow, which may not be bioavailable from fruiting bodies alone. The unique compounds include anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal enzymes that are beneficial to humans and animals alike.

Do Myzel mushroom powders include Beta-Glucans or other beneficial compounds?2023-05-01T15:28:13+00:00

Beta-Glucans, Polysaccharides, Adenosine, and Hericenones are some of the best known compounds produced by mushroom mycelium and fruiting bodies.

Research is starting to show that there are dozens of valuable components that support humans and animal health in full-spectrum mushroom products. That’s why Myzel is dedicated to incorporating the complete products of the growing process in our functional mushroom powders.

To ensure that these powders are safe for consumption, we use a 3rd party laboratory to analyze the identity, composition, purity and strength of our powders.

Are Myzel’s Mushroom Powders Certified Organic?2024-02-20T20:01:49+00:00

All Myzel’s products are certified Canada Organic by Ecocert. All mushroom powders are produced adhering to Canadian Organic Standards.

Canada Organic Regime is treated as equivalent to the organic standards enforced by the United States, the European Union, Switzerland, Japan, and Costa Rica.

Does Myzel test for heavy metals?2023-03-08T20:46:45+00:00

All of Myzel’s mushroom powders are subject to 3rd party testing for heavy metals and other contaminants.

We grow and process our own mushrooms in a pharmaceutical-grade facility, following Certified Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). Our mushrooms meet and exceed industry standards.

Does Myzel provide Certificates of Analysis (COAs)?2023-03-08T20:52:06+00:00

Myzel provides a Certificate of Analysis ( COA) for each of our mushroom varieties and products. We use a trusted 3rd party laboratory to test for, and measure:

  • Heavy Metals (Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury, Lead)
  • Glucans (Beta-D-GLucan, Alpha-Glucan)
  • Yeast, Mold and Disease (Salmonella)

A COA provides detailed information about the identity, quality, and purity of our mushroom powders.

What do your certifications mean?2024-06-05T19:48:36+00:00

All our mushroom powders are tested and certified by 3rd-party auditors. Our certifications for quality and food safety give buyers confidence in our operational, food safety, and quality controls.

Myzel’s production and quality certifications include:

  • HACCP Certificate of Compliance supporting GMP for food (May 2024)
  • Ecocert Canada Organic (January 2024)
  • Non-GMO Project Verified (February 2024)

Are Myzel’s mushroom powders gluten-free?2024-02-20T19:56:22+00:00

Yes, Myzel’s mushroom powders are all gluten-free. Our mushroom powders received SCS Global Services Gluten-Free Certification in 2024.

Myzel grows all our mushrooms on gluten-free Sorghum.

Sorghum provides a clean, nutraceutical-grade growing medium for our mushrooms. Sorghum is a nutritionally dense whole-grain that provides our mushrooms with the nutrients (including protein, iron, vitamins and minerals) they require to thrive.

Each time Myzel receives a delivery of Sorghum, we receive a Certificate of Compliance.  We carefully inspect every load to ensure no gluten-grain contamination is evident.  Every production lot is tested at sub-15ppm gluten threshold level to ensure that our mushroom powders exceed FDA guidelines that require less than 20ppm gluten for gluten-free product labeling.

Are Myzel’s mushrooms appropriate for vegetarian and vegan diets?2023-03-08T20:50:57+00:00

Yes. Myzel’s mushroom powders are vegetarian and vegan. Neither our mushrooms nor the mycelium contain animal-based ingredients.

Is Myzel a Net-Zero Certified company?2023-05-01T15:22:26+00:00

Myzel purpose-built our Wainfleet, Ontario facility with the goal of becoming the first Net-Zero Energy functional mushroom production facility in North America.

Our operations started formally in 2023, and we intend to audit our energy consumption monthly. Our Net-Zero Certification is currently pending.

How sustainable are your operations?2023-05-01T15:21:04+00:00

One of our first operational goals was to establish a sustainable agriculture operation in Canada. We purchased and adapted an existing agricultural facility to achieve a Net-Zero Energy certification. We retro-fitted the operation with Geothermal heating/cooling and a Return-Water system. Due to our geothermal plant, our heating and cooling energy requirements will be 80% less than a typical building of this nature. Once the rooftop solar is in place, we will generate more energy than we consume.

Our plans to install a solar power system are currently on hold; there is currently no capacity within the local switching station to handle our solar facility.

By leveraging natural resources from the earth, we can reduce our impact on the environment significantly and become one of North America’s sustainable, functional mushroom producers.

We work with a sustainability consultant to measure the environmental impact of our mushroom powder production. For more information, visit our sustainability page.

Does Myzel operate a net-zero facility?2023-03-08T20:47:14+00:00

To get to Net-Zero, we need to add solar power to our roof.

Currently, there is no capacity within the local switching station to handle our solar facility in a grid tie situation. As a result, we will be redesigning our planned implementation for a 2024 implementation.

In the meantime, we will be monitoring our electrical energy consumption.

Can Myzel help me with product formulation?2024-02-20T19:52:25+00:00

Myzel recommends that manufacturers conduct independent research & development for all new product formulations. Manufacturers are independently responsible for the safety and efficacy of new products including Myzel’s mushroom powder. During the sales process, Myzel may make recommendations about mushroom powder inclusion for new products based on 3rd party data, comparative market research, and known safe inclusion rates.
