  • Protecting water quality; and
  • Annually auditing the facility to ensure strict adherence to organic standards.

Myzel chose to pursue the Ecocert COR certification for its global reputation and recognition.

Canada Organic Regime is treated as equivalent to the organic standards enforced by the United States, the European Union, Switzerland, Japan, and Costa Rica.

As an additional step, we also committed to using non-GMO, Gluten-free and Vegan materials.

Myzel’s Commitment to Organic Cultivation

Organic certification is an important achievement for Myzel Organics. Over the past year, the team carefully selected materials and created operating procedures to ensure 100% organic operations within the facility at all times.

Why is Organic Certification Important to Myzel?

As part of the vision for a sustainable operation, our founding team designed the facility to respect organic protocols from day one. Selection of materials (like cleaning agents and pest control systems) were chosen because they adhered to organic standards.

That was months before we started actively growing mushrooms.

Now that we’re producing thousands of kilograms of mushrooms every week, our commitment to organic production really goes into action. The grain we use for substrate is organic. The materials we use to start spawn are organic. The mushroom spores we use to inoculate substrate are organic.

What Makes a Mushroom Organic?

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Mushrooms can be labeled organic if they’re grown in a substrate that excludes prohibited substances applied for three years prior to harvest. (Prohibited substances include synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, fillers, or use or irradiation.)

Our substrate provider grows a variety of grains including sorghum; everything produced by this provider is certified organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, and identity preserved.

What does it mean to be certified organic in Canada?

According to the CFIA, an organic product has been cultivated naturally without the use of: synthetic pesticides and fertilizers; genetically modified organisms; antibiotics or hormones; or artificial colours, flavours, or preservatives.

A certified organic producer follows a strict set of standards enforced by the CFIA. This agency  selects partners (like Ecocert) to audit and certify Canadian farms and manufacturers as organic. The annual commitment to audits ensures that each producer continues to meet the federal regulations after initial registration.

Beyond the certification and enforcement of organic regulations, organic production offers a guarantee about quality and sustainability.

Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

A commitment to producing organic mushrooms is also a commitment to traceability, supply access, and continuity.

By complying with COR regulations, Myzel agrees to:

  • Track where everything in the production supply chain comes from

By complying with COR regulations, organic partners and supplies agree to:

  • Sustainably provide natural products at a consistent pace and quality

Together, partners in the organic supply chain commit to principles that efficiently use natural resources, protect ecosystems, and ensure

Commercial Role of Organic Certification

Most of our buyers and prospects only use organic materials in their products. That’s largely a result of the rates at which consumer interest in environmentally friendly food products is growing.

Organic products promise to deliver healthy alternatives to their conventional counterparts because they are not grown with pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides.

In 2021, the Canadian market for organic food was valued at ~$6.5 billion. The US market for organic food was valued at $202.7 billion in 2023, and is expected to grow to $535.0 billion by 2032.

Needless to say – this is a growing market and we’re committed to fulfilling needs at a sustainable pace. To satisfy specifications about organic statuts we present our Ecocert Canada Organic Certificate to every buyer.
